Yalumba Wines

From Yalumba Family Winemakers:

"Yalumba is a winery located near the town of Angaston, South Australia in Eden Valley. It was founded by British immigrant Samuel Smith, who moved to Australia with his family from Wareham, Dorset in August 1847 aboard the ship 'China'.

Upon arriving in Australia in December, Smith built a small house on the banks of the River Torrens. He lived there less than a year before moving north to Angaston where he purchased a 30-acre (120,000 m2) block of land on the settlement's south eastern boundary.

He named his property "Yalumba" after an indigenous Australian word for "all the land around". In 1849 Samuel Smith, along with his son Sidney, planted Yalumba's first vineyards, beginning the Yalumba journey.

In 2019 Yalumba celebrates its 170th year, welcoming the 6th generation to the family business and remains Australia's oldest family-owned winery."

Celluloids, initially marketed as Parkesine by Alexander Parkes, were first manufactured in 1856, and are considered to be the first plastic produced by mankind. Celluloids are plastic compounds made from dissolved Nitrocellulose and Camphor. Bakelite, first produced in 1907 from a reaction of phenol with formaldehyde, was the first plastic made from synthetic components.

Our Queensland team attended the FoodTech 2019 Conference at the Brisbane Convention Centre on  28th - 30th July, 2019.

We displayed a range of Velp instruments including the Velp SER 158 for determination of oil and fats, and the VELP UDK Distillation unit to determine nitrogen content in food.

In Ellicia’s words;

“Out of the vast number of study areas available in Chemistry, I am most interested in Sustainable Chemistry.

In this day and age, with the increasing levels of Green House Gas emissions, decreasing fossil fuel supplies and the increasing demand from a growing population, we need to, as a collective society, develop and use more ‘greener’ methods, materials and practises to improve the health of the environment including ourselves.

With further research, innovation and technological advancement our sustainability goals can be met in the near future, which will ultimately lead to a more prosperous and healthier communities.
I’m extremely proud and honoured to be awarded the 2019 Rowe Scientific Chemistry Scholarship. Thank you to Rowe Scientific for donating the award and to the Monash University Chemistry Faculty for being selected to receive this award.”

The winner of the 2019 Rowe Scientific Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Chemistry Scholarship at Curtin University, is Ms Caitlin Duncan.

In Caitlin’s words; 

"My PhD is looking into synthesising calix[4]arenes functionalised with different functional groups to test their inhibitory properties on the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is a continuation of my Honours research.

The reason this area is relevant is because HPV is the primary cause of cervical cancer and approximately 5% of all cancer worldwide. There are over 200 types of HPV and currently only nine of these types can be prevented through vaccination programs.

In addition, there are currently only treatments available for the symptoms, with no treatments that target the viral infection itself. The aim of my research is to investigate if different functional groups are better at binding to the capsid protein of HPV than the previously tested compounds.

By binding to the capsid protein of HPV before it assembles, these compounds can inhibit assembly, which could help lead to a potential treatment for HPV infections. I would kindly like to thank Rowe Scientific for their generosity with this award.”

Our congratulations to the following two recipients of a Rowe Scientific Scholarship at Deakin University.

Mr William Murrell


In William’s words;

"I was encouraged to apply for the Rowe Scientific Scholarship by Professor Colin Barrow, Deakin’s Chair in Biotechnology.

Receiving the scholarship has helped me financially and is an excellent addition to my CV. This scholarship has taken away some of my student debt, giving me more money to use elsewhere. I would like to purchase a new laptop to help with my studies as my current machine is quite old.

Chemistry has always been interesting to me as it allows for manipulation of materials at their most fundamental molecular level through systematic knowledge, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I’m particularly passionate about synthetic chemistry because chemistry knowledge and procedures can be used to engineer new materials and innovations.

My studies have definitely confirmed my interest in working in a synthetic laboratory environment. In the future, I would like to complete a PhD to develop ideas presented in my thesis on the use of polynorbornanes to create metallosupramolecular ligands.

During my Bachelor’s degree I completed a research project at the Deakin Institute of Frontier Materials, supervised by Dr Alessandra Sutti and Dr Marzieh Parhizkar. This was a great learning experience which taught me how research teams operate in a professional environment. My interests outside of studying are largely music related. I am an avid follower of local music and play in a Ballarat band.

I know there are a lot of places Rowe Scientific could have donated to so I am glad you chose to invest in the future of science, through this program at Deakin. Thank you."

In Mikayla’s words;

"Scholarships recognise people who have devoted so much to their research and can have a great impact on their future research and employment opportunities. Being awarded the Rowe Scientific scholarship is a step towards my future goals.

At the beginning of the year I left my part-time job to undertake my Honours full-time. I spend a great amount of time in the lab focusing on my research and uncovering fascinating results. The scholarship gives me the opportunity to continue my research without the stress of part-time work and allows me to accept any development opportunities that arise.
I am so passionate about my research because I know that it can make a difference within the community. To quote Nobel Laureate Frederick Sanger, “scientific research is one of the most exciting and rewarding of occupations.”

I didn’t see myself following a synthetic chemistry path but further study has shown me I do have what it takes. It has strengthened my passion and interest for chemistry and given me the confidence to pursue a career in this field. It has also enabled me to demonstrate to others that girls can do science too.

This year I was given the opportunity to run demonstrations for first year chemistry classes, broadening my personal skills and knowledge. Additionally, I’ve been able to collaborate with the Victoria Police Forensic Services Department, working closely with their Principal Research Development and Innovation Specialist, Acting Chief Forensic Scientist and Forensic Chemist.

Once I complete my Honours, I will apply to study a PhD, with a focus on Forensic Chemistry based research. However, if this isn’t possible, I will apply for a position with the Victoria Police Forensic Services Centre or the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine.

The generosity of Reg Rowe and Rowe Scientific has inspired me to continue striving towards my goals, believing in myself and empowering others. Most importantly, as a woman in science, I feel this scholarship has given me the power to make a difference to the gender gap in the STEM workforce."

Well, by the time you read this we will be out of Winter and into the Spring months in Adelaide.
I suppose it serves me right for “counting my chickens before they're hatched” with last months comment of both Adelaide teams being in the top 8, as they have both capitulated, leaving Adelaide with a “mathematical” chance of playing Finals if they beat the Bulldogs.
By the time you receive this newsletter, we will have a new staff member in Adelaide who joins us on 26/8/19 by the name of Erik Mooney. He will be taking over our Logistics and Admin role and freeing up time for the rest of the Adelaide team.

As a reminder we have some upcoming Trade Shows which we will be exhibiting at in Adelaide this year. We will be at the Bliss event in October and a RACI event in December. Thanks to all those who visited us recently at previous conferences.
