Acting Associate Dean Applied Chemistry and Environmental Science, Trevor Rook, presenting award to Dale Ashley Osborne.
Congratulations Dale, from all the Victorian staff of Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.
In Dale’s words;
“Ever since high school, I have loved chemistry. I have always had a curiosity for how everything works, and chemistry is my doorway to understanding this from the ground up. In particular, I love to discover new things, which is what sparked my interest in scientific research.
My research-oriented Dean’s Scholar (Honours) degree at RMIT University has helped me to achieve this. With the ROWE Scientific Scholarship, I have been able to fully focus on my Honours studies this year. It has also allowed me to perform additional research within my supervisor’s group that has helped expand my experiences in chemistry.”

ROWE SCIENTIFIC CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY
Congratulations to Benjamin Wickstein and Paul Youssef, recipients of the 2017 Rowe Scientific Chemistry Scholarships.
Benjamin Wickstein (Bachelor of Science)
In Benjamin’s words,
“I enjoy how chemistry can reveal the sophisticated secrets behind everyday phenomena. My special area of interest is in inorganic chemistry. I particularly like how the study of chemistry encourages people to approach problems and situations from different angles, and use different models to solve real-world issues.
I also revel in how far-reaching chemistry is and how it pervades all aspects of life. I hope to be accepted into Honours study next year, and am looking forward to the research experience this will give me.
I am also considering further studies at a PhD level or alternatively, looking for work in the chemical industry.
The choices governing my future goals have been influenced in part thanks to the support of the Rowe Scientific Chemistry Scholarships. Receiving the scholarship has enabled me to spend more time on my studies and less time at my part-time job, which has encouraged and given me the financial security needed to pursue honours study next year.
Thank you, Rowe Scientific, for your incredible support.”

Paul Youssef (Bachelor of Medical Science)
In Paul’s words, “The decision to major in chemistry was easy: it was the only subject I could see myself pursuing and it offered me immense pleasure and a tremendous learning experience. The knowledge I gathered over the years from studying medical science units complemented this desire to pursue chemistry, and so I found a new and unshakeable interest in the field of medicine and medicinal chemistry.
I love the concept-based learning encapsulated in all fields of chemistry, as it satisfies my curiosity about the world and the way it works.
The laboratory sessions we engage in as part of the degree are challenging but also enjoyable; the labs are a great, safe space in which to translate theoretical knowledge into practice. It really helps ground what we learn in lectures into real-world areas.
I look forward to the chemistry Honours program next year. Being able to conduct medical chemistry research within the labs is something I’m excited to do. I believe my Honours year will be an invaluable learning experience.
Rowe Scientific, I am so grateful for your immense generosity. You have given me the chance to pursue my chemistry aspirations without the worry of financial burdens. Your kindness has also reminded me that hard work is almost always noticed, and that it always pays off.
It is because of this that I’ve been inspired to work even harder. Your support and belief in me had a definite impact on my academic achievements, and my future as a whole. Thank you for being a part of my journey.”
Well done gentlemen.

Every year, the STAWA are involved in running a Science Talent Search in WA. Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd are proud to be involved in providing sponsorship and cash prizes for the winners of some of the categories. There is insufficient room in this newsletter to list all prize recipients.
The following has been chosen for its chemistry content.
L-R. Stacey Fairhead (STAWA President), Kaitlan Radegonde, Shazarleya Cox, Tuwarnah Dawson and Allan Brien (CEO Scitech).
Ms Kaitlan Radegonde, Ms Shazarleya Cox, and Ms Tuwarnah Dawson of Christian Aboriginal Parent Directed School (CAPS) in Coolgardie (near Kalgoorlie in WA), won first prize in the Senior Research Investigation Category at the Science Talent Search at Scitech in Perth, on 18th September last .
The title of their investigation was “Extracting Biodiesel from Used Kitchen Oil, Chicken Fat, and Pork Fat”. This group investigated a number of alternatives for the production of biodiesel. They found that biofuel produced using used kitchen oil, contained more energy than other sources and with an energy yield close to that of commercial diesel. This could be a good use of waste cooking oil from commercial kitchens!
Well done people, from all the staff of Rowe Scientific.

DO YOU NEED HELP IN CHOOSING THE CORRECT STIRRING SHAFT FOR YOUR LABORATORY STIRRER?
Stirring shafts are typically selected by taking into consideration the stirrer power, volume of substance to be stirred and its viscosity.
To aid you in selecting the correct stirring shafts, the information below outlines the technical features of each blade in conjunction with the application fields and typical laboratory uses.
STIRRING SHAFT WITH FLOATING BLADE
Features: The two blades open when speed increases which creates an axial flow in the vessel from top to bottom.
Particularly useful for stirring in narrow neck containers, such as stirring within flasks.
Uses: Stirring at medium to high speed of; high solids, flocculation, mixing of thickening agents, sludges, etc.
STIRRING SHAFT WITH FOLDING BLADE
Features: The blade falls into line automatically during rotation and provides an axial flow in the vessel from top to bottom.
Particularly useful for stirring in narrow neck containers.
Uses: Stirring at medium to high speed of; high solids, flocculation, mixing of thickening agents, sludges, etc.
STIRRING SHAFT WITH FIXED BLADE
Features: Produces an axial flow in the vessel from top to bottom.
Uses: Stirring at medium to high speed of; high solids, flocculation, mixing of thickening agents, sludges, etc.
STIRRING SHAFT WITH PROPELLOR
Features: Produces an axial flow in the vessel from bottom to top with local shearing.
Uses: Stirring at medium to high speed of; high solids, flocculation, mixing of thickening agents, sludges, etc.
STIRRING SHAFT WITH PADDLE
Features: Produces a tangential flow with limited turbulence combined with a gentle mixing action.
Uses: Stirring at low to medium speed when a good heat exchange between the mixed products is required.
STIRRING SHAFT WITH TURBINE
Features: Produces a radial flow with movement of products from top to bottom with a strong turbulence and shearing.
Uses: Use at medium to high speed for dissolving products or breaking particles.
STIRRING SHAFT WITH TURBO PROPELLOR
Features: Produces an axial flow in the vessel from top to bottom with limited shearing. The possibility of contact of the propeller with the sides of vessel is limited.
Uses: Stirring at medium to low speed of; high solids, flocculation or dissolving dyestuffs.
STIRRING SHAFT WITH ANCHOR CODE
Features: Produces a tangential flow with high shearing at the outer parts. The produced flow limits the deposition of solids on the side of the vessel.
Uses: Homogenisation at low to medium speed of high solids in liquids with medium to high viscosity.

On 20th October last, the SEAACT conducted its Science and Engineering Fair at the CSIRO Discovery Centre on Clunies Ross Drive, Black Mountain. Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd are pleased to be one of the sponsors. There is insufficient room in this newsletter to acknowledge all prize recipients.
The following project was selected on the basis of its relevance to the health of the marine environment. This project explored the distribution of microplastics in oceanic environments and its relation to urbanisation and human activity. Microplastic loads in different beach sediments were measured and the results were used to determine the relationship between the level of urbanisation and the size of microplastic loads.
The results displayed the most effective method for the removal and prevention of microplastic pollution, thus ensuring that the issue of microplastics in water bodies is handled in the most efficient way possible. This work was conducted by Ms Priya Leedman of Lyneham High School, who was awarded 1st prize in the “Earth & Space” section of the Fair.
She is pictured in the following photos with other award winners from Lyneham High School.

NEW SOUTH WALES
Dear Clients,
The mad end of year dash is upon us and it seems to get earlier each year as tertiary and research institutes rush to spend any remaining funds before the end of the calendar year.
This is also the time of year when researchers across the country learn of their success or otherwise, in securing funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NMHRC) and the Australian Research Council (ARC) grants. All in all it is shaping up to be a busy run into to the end of the year.
Rowe Scientific NSW has continued to build its presence in the tertiary and research centres throughout 2017 which now form a major part of the Rowe Scientific business in NSW. The addition of new agencies including DLAB and the introduction of an extended range of products from some existing agencies including Citotest and Tarsons has fuelled this growth.
Best Wishes for the Christmas season and the New Year ahead from the Rowe Scientific NSW team.
All the best from: Allan, John, Kathryn, Ken, Rodney and Jim.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA & NORTHERN TERRITORY
Dear Clients,
Well it certainly was a disappointing result for Adelaide supporters but on the flip side it was a terrific result for Richmond supporters who taste success for the first time in many years. They were definitely the better side on the day.
We are also pleased to announce that we have appointed 2 new staff members in our Adelaide office. We would like to welcome the arrival of Danielle (Dani) Riordan who comes to us with many years experience within the wine industry sector. We also welcome Joanne (Jo) Hards to our team who also has a background in winery, food laboratories, sales and procurement.
This article should be getting out into the market at roughly the same time as our Edition 13 Vintage catalogue, so you can expect to see Daniel Spano and I dropping it off to discuss the exciting new additions to our portfolio soon.
Are you losing time having lab staff mix the same routine chemicals time and time again? We can help by creating and supplying these solutions to save you time and money. For more information on how we can help, please contact your Account Manager. All the best from: Doug, Steve, Mark, Michael, Daniel, Jo, Dani and Paula.

VICTORIA & TASMANIA
Dear Clients,
November is here, time flies and already we are experiencing Melbourne’s pot pourri in the weather stakes, still, where would we be without it.
As usual, Rowe Scientific will be operating through the Christmas & New Year period, except for public holidays, however you do need to bear in mind that courier services may not be as readily available as usual. Start planning for the break now to avoid the last minute rushes. When you next think about it, it may be too late.
Have you stocked up on Vials yet? This incredible special cannot be repeated and expires at the end of December.
If you need to do some air sampling please take a look at the latest GilAirPlus as it has all the features you’ll ever need and it now has Bluetooth as well!
Hope to hear from you soon.
From your team in Victoria: Garry, Nic, Mango, Amanda, Adam, Brian and Christine.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Dear Clients,
There is a definite upswing to business as we approach Christmas. Perhaps it is the expectation of a break, or it could be the improvement in the weather. An early note to inform you that whilst we close for the Public Holidays over the festive season, on all other days our offices across the country will be staffed and ready to assist you with your needs.
As I write, our Rowe Scientific Wall Planner is in print and you can expect to receive your copy in the mail in the days to come. Continuing last years theme with a feature on the back, this year we will focus on Signal Words and Phrases from the Global Harmonised System (GHS) labelling of chemicals. Please ask your Account Manager for a second copy of the planner if you would like to show both sides simultaneously.
As always, the Rowe Scientific team and I thank you for your past business and ongoing support
Regards Peter Sommers and the Western Australian Team.
