From Stawell Goldmines:

Stawell Gold Mines is located approximately 240 km northwest of Melbourne, 70 km southeast of Horsham and 2 km east of the Stawell CBD. All surface and underground infrastructure associated with the site’s operations are located within the MIN5260 lease area.

Stawell Gold Mines has operated at its current location since 1981, which has involved the progressive mining of gold in a series of open pits and extensive underground workings. The surface operations are situated adjacent to the eastern boundary of the Stawell Township and encompass an approximate area of 380 ha. The site’s underground workings extend from the Magdala portal in a north-westerly direction underneath the town.
 
In December 2017, private equity group Arete Capital Partners acquired a controlling interest in Stawell Gold Mines and related assets in Western Victoria, with the intention of returning the site to production by expanding the existing exploration programs to build the mineral inventory for the site. Throughout 2018, underground exploration took place allowing SGM to shore up future reserves resulting in the transition from care and maintenance towards restarting production in early 2019.

This was followed by a period of recommissioning the processing plant and re-starting underground mining operations with the first production firing taking place in December 2018, and the first gold pour taking place on 31 January 2019. Stawell Gold Mines acknowledges that socially responsible practices are essential to the success of its business. Congratulations to Ms Yunn Tun, the current recipient of the Rowe Scientific Prize in Chemistry at Edith Cowan University in WA, being presented with her prize by Mr Dominic Dempster of Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd on 4th March.

In Yunn’s own words;

“I am writing in regard to receiving the ECU Rowe Scientific Chemistry Award. I am glad and thankful for this recognition.

A little background about myself, I have completed a Bachelor of Science with double majors in Applied Chemistry and Data Science. My interest in Chemistry subject during high school led me to choose Applied Chemistry as my major. This major mainly focuses on Analytical Chemistry which is interesting and applicable in many industries. The analysis that can be done through analytical chemistry techniques ranges from process control to drug manufacturing. Through the study of Chemistry, I have developed and improved my analytical and critical thinking skills which helped me succeed in both majors I undertook.

During my studies, I enjoyed the theoretical perspective of things and appreciate its importance in the understanding of the process that takes place in the laboratory. Performing experiments bring those theories into somewhat of visual actions in order to achieve particular experimental aims. Working in labs has also equipped me with a vigilant observation of possible hazards, making safety a priority. Moreover, teamwork and communication skills were also enhanced. Overall, the study of Chemistry helped improve various skills that can be applied to different disciplines and fields of work. Once again, I thank Rowe Scientific for this generous donation.”

"I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to have been selected as the recipient of this scholarship. I am honoured to receive this award and cannot thank you enough for your generosity in funding it.

The financial support will significantly assist me in my studies. I have always been drawn towards the sciences and have a natural curiosity for the unknown, so it was only fitting that I enrolled in this program after high school to explore this passion. I chose a major in biology and a minor in chemistry, and as my love for chemistry continues to grow, I plan on continuing my studies by applying for Honours in 2023. Eventually, I would like to complete a PhD and my ultimate dream is to teach chemistry at the tertiary level, where I hope to share my passion with others and inspire future students as I have been inspired by my lecturers.

The scholarship will allow me to focus on my academic achievement in my final year without the worry of financial burden. The eased financial pressure will also allow me to explore work placement opportunities to gain real-world lab experience to complement my degree. In Meg's own words;

"Through a series of undergraduate research projects in various research areas, I discovered my love for analytical chemistry, and particularly applied spectroscopy. I pursued this interest in Honours, developing a protocol for microplastic detection using infrared light (specifically Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic imaging). I found the process of understanding how different wavelengths of light interact with different molecules fascinating, and using knowledge to develop “real world” analytical tools was very rewarding. For my postgraduate studies, I plan to pursue this passion, where I will be studying how X-rays interact with different metal ions. I will then use this insight to develop new microscopy protocols to image metal speciation in plants, in the context of crop disease.

Why study metal ions? Transition metal ions (e.g. ions of Fe, Cu, Zn) perform a wide array of functions in cell biology, and without metal ions life would not exist. The variety of biological functions performed by metal ions are intrinsically linked to metal ion coordination chemistry (oxidation state of the metal, the types of molecules that bond to the metal, and the 3D geometric arrangement of bonds around the metal). Visualising coordination chemistry in the context of cell function is important to understand how healthy biological systems work across different physiological processes and also during disease.

Why study crop disease? Agriculture is a major contributor to the Australian economy, but fungal disease can result in massive crop losses, and therefore carries a huge economic burden. Many fungal diseases are involved in a “war for nutrients” with the host plant. Indeed, plants have developed many unique chemical strategies that involve metal ions to protect themselves from fungal infection. However, although metal ions are known to be involved in these strategies, exactly how the metal ions provide protection is often unknown. It is hoped that the analytical methods I will develop in my PhD can be used to help elucidate mechanisms through which the coordination chemistry of metal ions can provide protection from fungal disease in Australian crops and inform development of future prevention and treatment methods. Thank you for your support! It is truly helping me continue the research I am passionate about."

"As a young student and a near constant inhabitant of my school library, I'd once chanced upon 'Nature's Building Blocks' by John Emsley.

I was fascinated by the sheer amount of information we currently possess on the chemistry of our daily life and was steadily but surely drawn in. As the years passed, I went from a wide-eyed student fascinated by obscure chemical formulae to an individual sincerely interested in learning how chemistry has shaped our lives.

CHM1022 has offered a chance for me to satisfy this desire. With content focussing on organic and inorganic chemistry, carefully tailored so as to touch base upon relevant chemical principles, the unit is beautifully run.

The demonstrators and lecturers have been incredibly keen about sharing their knowledge and passion for the subject. I am grateful for their genuine enthusiasm in teaching us all they know and am curious to learn all the more."

"CHM1052 has been an enriching and exciting experience all semester. The contagious enthusiasm from all the lecturers and my lab TA for teaching this semester, chemistry content has been fantastically motivating, and has contributed toward encouraging me to pursue a major in chemistry.

This semester‚ online lab content has been especially challenging and rewarding, and has pushed me to pay strict attention to detail and take great care in my work. Additionally, it has inspired me to participate in Summer Research Projects in chemistry offered by the university.

This summer, I will participate in a research project with Professor Alan Chaffee in recovering active carbon from waste for water purification purposes, a project I am thrilled to be a part of, and I hope to participate in many more. Following that in 2022 and onwards, I will continue my chemistry studies pursuing a major in chemistry with interests in inorganic and physical chemistry.
 
The quality of content and teaching from CHM1052 and the excitement that has followed has certainly inspired me to continue with chemistry, and I am eager to see where it takes me."

"I'm undertaking a 6-unit chem minor so that I'm qualified to teach it in high schools as a potential career option a la Walter from Breaking Bad, which was the show that got me interested in chem ever since high school.
 
I actually switched from CHM2942 into this unit because I realised how my numeracy skills were really limited by my synthetic chem background when I attempted but failed to explain electrolysis adequately to a year 12 student I was tutoring.

After taking CHM2922, I was able to significantly improve upon my computer literacy as I'd describe CHM2922 as an Excel bootcamp, which will prove extremely valuable to me in a research placement unit I will be undertaking in the upcoming summer semester A."

"Ever since high school chemistry has been my favourite subject. However, my passion and love for chemistry grew significantly once at university, as I was exposed to so many new and exciting areas of chemistry.

Although chemistry is challenging at times, I love that there are always new things to discover and explore in order to challenge yourself further. Biological chemistry has always been an area that piqued my interest, as it incorporated so many different aspects of both chemistry and biology, two of my favourite subjects.

CHM2942 has been a wonderful unit to consolidate my pre-existing biological chemistry knowledge, while enriching my chemistry knowledge further with a range of new concepts. I have always wanted to continue my studies and complete an honours year in chemistry, and this unit has definitely inspired me to look further into projects that incorporate aspects of biological chemistry. Additionally, I have always struggled with spectroscopy theory difficult. However, the biospectroscopy aspect of this course opened my eyes to a new area of spectroscopy and motivated me to look past my previous difficulties and work hard to learn more about this previously unfamiliar area of biological chemistry."

"As a student enrolled in both Biomedical Science and Science, I have had the opportunity to develop my understanding and appreciation for biology, chemistry, and physics.

By being able to experience each discipline, I have come to realise that chemistry makes both biology and physics more interesting and exciting to learn. In my experience, chemistry brings a deeper knowledge of biology by explaining the underlying forces which govern life.

Simultaneously, chemistry has also made theoretical physics more practical as I have been able to apply them in a laboratory to create visible chemical changes. It has been these observations that have brought me to feel that chemistry is the most valuable link between the major scientific branches, and why I have chosen to further develop my knowledge through a chemistry major.

My time in food chemistry has allowed me to gain an appreciation for how chemistry can be applied practically to the foods we consume and grow. Ultimately, food chemistry has inspired me to value where my food comes from, why each macromolecule contributes to my health, and how food types create flavour."

"My passion for chemistry stems from my desire to move towards a greener and healthier world.

I love being able to walk out of a lecture or laboratory and see real world applications of the seemingly abstract concepts that I have learnt. Through my CHM2990 project, I engaged in research that was working towards a very exciting energy chemistry application, that would lead to the use of solar energy to produce fertilisers.

This research aligned very well with my passion for making fossil fuels redundant on Earth. After my first two years of university being nearly entirely online, the opportunity to work in a laboratory, somewhat individually, really ignited my love for experimental chemistry. As well as laboratory experience, I gained skill in report writing, liaising with other researchers, and reporting on work in group meetings, all of which will serve me well going forwards in my career."

"Ever since I could walk, I have been fascinated by understanding how the world works.

Being the science that breaks understanding down to the smallest possible pieces, chemistry has been a huge passion of my whole life. However, leaning about the universe on microscopic levels can often make it hard to relate the science to our everyday lives.

CHM3180 has been the most enjoyable unit I have studied over my university degree since it is so relatable to society. Specifically, leaning about how polymers are manipulated on molecular levels to produce the unique properties we take for granted in our everyday plastics. Additionally,

I am extremely passionate about reducing our carbon emissions to combat climate change. Leaning about ionic liquids and how they can be used in ammonia cells to produce, store and use energy in more efficient and sustainable ways has sparked my interest in this field which I wish to work in in the future."

"Chemistry has been my favourite subject since I first learnt about it in year 7. What I love most about chemistry is the fact that it is all around us. When my friends tell me that a new product has‚ no chemicals in it, I will always remind them that‚ everything is made up of chemicals, so they can‚ be that bad!

CHM3922 has made me realise my passion for organic chemistry. Particularly, I am interested in the use of organic molecules as medicines. Throughout this unit, I have gained a greater appreciation for the chemical processes behind the creation of everyday, and life-saving drug treatments.

This unit has been rewarding as even though the concepts can be challenging to comprehend at times, once they are understood, they can be applied to many different scenarios. For example, once I understood the basic principles of reaction mechanisms, I was able to solve many different problems in the workshops and in assessments.

After engaging in the unit and having conversations with lecturers, I have been inspired to complete the chemistry research project unit to further enhance my understanding of organic chemistry."

"All my life I have been passionate about science and the legal system. This has led me to developing a passion for forensic science.

The practical elements of chemistry and logical theory has piqued my interest driven my aspirations to pursue a career relevant to chemistry. CHM3952 (analytical chemistry) is right around my alley, the mathematical component and research project offered helped me develop my skills in the field and prepare me for some of the tasks I expect to experience in the workforce.

Chemistry is one of the fundamental sciences that explains so much of how the world works, there is unlimited potential for this field and the diversity of projects and interdisciplinary projects fuels my imagination and what could be possible following a career in chemistry.

CHM3972 Sustainable Chemistry

"When I was young, I used to dream of being an alchemist and synthesising useful materials. When I attended secondary school, I found that I was interested in chemistry because everything that surrounds us is made up of chemicals and understanding chemistry allows me to synthesise compounds such as plastics and drugs.

Hence, I decided to pursue my dream and major in chemistry. I completed and scored well in biological, medicinal, and advanced organic chemistry 90, 92 and 96, respectively. I decided to do CHM3972 because I wanted to know more about the sustainable way to synthesise organic compounds.
 
This unit inspired me because it taught me the 12 principles of green chemistry, the idea of using solvent free methods to synthesise organic compounds and the use of flow chemistry to synthesise compounds. It also inspired me to learn how to tackle carbon emissions, and how to generate hydrogen gas by electrolysis of water and the use of CO2 as the starting materials to synthesise fuel and polymers."

"I have always been fascinated by how the world works from a young age and therefore became interested in chemistry as it seemed to explain how everything works and fits together.

After spending the second year of my science degree online, taking the CHM3990 unit has been very inspiring. It gave me a real world, face to face look into research with a team of students and academics who were supportive and engaging. My degree had lacked laboratory experience due to ongoing COVID restrictions, but the team were patient with me and by taking this unit I have been able to learn a whole range of practical lab skills and knowledge in peptide chemistry. It enabled me to get a taste for what it is like to conduct formal research.

These are invaluable skills that without this unit I would not have had the opportunity to acquire. I have gained a small insight into the incredible, ground-breaking research being done at Monash University. This unit has truly inspired and prepared me to want to continue research into Honours."

Over recent weeks, we have continued to receive communications from our suppliers both locally and overseas regarding price increases and freight delays. The cost of raw materials is increasing in many instances; and some raw materials are becoming increasingly difficult to source. This is causing delays in the production of goods, and resulting in higher costs. Limited freight availability also continues to result in extended lead times for goods being sourced overseas; and the war in Ukraine has only accelerated this situation, for our European suppliers in particular. We ask again that you place your orders with us as soon as possible, for the best chance of goods being available when you need them.

Please also discuss with your Account Manager your ongoing needs for consumables, so that we can aim to order in your consumables in advance of your requirements wherever possible. We strive to provide you with excellent service, despite the aforementioned difficulties that we are facing.
 
In order to do so, we have recently welcomed a new addition to our NSW sales team. Kai Ren Yeong has joined our team as an Internal Salesperson, and is settling into his new role in our Sydney office. Our team has been very busy over the past few months thanks to your on-going support. We continue to face many challenges through out the supply chain. Manufacturers, both local and overseas are still struggling with delayed supplies of materials, and the lack of skilled workers and local and international freight services have not returned to pre-covid service standards.

We at Rowe Scientific are working hard to secure renewed supply of stock, as well as to source as many suitable alternatives as possible. If there are any critical products that you need in order to do your work, then let us know so that we can adjust our stock levels where necessary to ensure continuity of supply. We are seeking a new Internal Account Manager to support our growing business. Dear Clients, thanks for your support.

Like all of you, the operational side of our business has been impacted by COVID, whether it is our own staff or shortages in the logistic chain. So far we have remained open in all states, though at times our ability to supply you in a timely manner has been affected. We are working on addressing this shortfall, hiring new people (see the Careers page on our website) and working overtime to fill your orders.

Our stock levels remain healthy. Across the board, we are paying more than ever before for goods, we thought were commodities.
