Berton Vinyard
When Bob Berton, Jamie Bennett, and James Ceccato acquired the former Southcorp winery in the heart of the Riverina back in 2005, their vision wasn’t to become a top 20 wine producer. With only two months to prepare for their first 14,000-tonne crush, the trio embarked on a whirlwind start. A bottling line was established within a year, and the groundwork was laid for what would become one of Australia’s most diverse wine producers. From those humble beginnings, Berton Vineyards has grown to produce over a million cases of wine annually—half of which proudly bears the Berton name, offering something for every palate and every price point.
|
|
At Berton Vineyards we have never lost sight of why we started, ‘to craft wines we are proud of’. Whether it’s a top-shelf red or a mid-range white destined for supermarket shelves, every wine is given the same time and dedication. We invest wholeheartedly into every single wine, because we have recognised the importance of every price point. This ethos has underpinned our ability to adapt to the ever-evolving global wine market and navigate the challenges the industry has faced over the last two decades, from economic downturns to shifting consumer tastes.
|
|
|
|
Yet growth has never come at the cost of responsibility. Sustainability is embedded in our operations from vineyard to bottle. As certified members of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, we prioritise efficiency and minimal environmental impact, recycling wastewater via our turf farm, using recycled content in all our packaging, and consistently seeking innovative ways to reduce our footprint. Our dedication was recently recognised by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), awarding us the SME Industry Sector Award for our fully recyclable packaging efforts. Sustainability isn’t a box we tick……it’s a philosophy we live by.
|
|
Looking forward, our goal is to remain as relevant and responsible tomorrow as we are today. That means embracing climate challenges, adjusting to consumer demands for lighter packaging and vegan-friendly wines, and always refining our processes. As winemakers, we believe in capturing fruit at its optimum and letting that natural beauty shine. And as custodians of our land and legacy, we know that how we grow, bottle, and share our wine today will shape the kind of business we are tomorrow.
Managing Director, Jamie Bennett

Question:
The longest election of a Pope took how long, when did it occur, and elected which Pope?
The answer will be in the next edition of the Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd newsletter.
Did you know the answer to the last quiz question?
In 1996, Ritonavir, an anti-HIV drug was put on the market to much success. In 1998 however, the potency of the drug begun to plummet, and the chemical was found to be less soluble and less bioavailable than it was originally, leading to the drug being pulled from market for a number of years.
What was the cause of this?
Answer: Disappearing Polymorphs
A: These occur when there are two or more morphs of a substance, and one morph has lower Gibbs free energy, but is kinetically slower to form. Initially, all or a majority of the substance formed will be of the fast kinetically, but high Gibbs energy morph. Eventually by accident or catalysis, the lower energy morph is created, which acts as a seed crystal, propagating the formation of the lower energy morph from the higher energy one. The original ‘Form I” Ritonavir was quite soluble and efficacious against HIV. In 1998 however, “Form II” was discovered. This was a more stable polymorph that existed at a lower energy level, promoting its formation over the original crystal.
Any laboratory or fab site that detected trace levels of Form II was quickly thereafter unable to produce Form I. Speculation was that people that had worked in the affected fabs would carry traces of Form II to other facilities, and unwittingly poison them. In the space of a few weeks, every site producing Form I was instead turning out Form II. The problem was that Form II was much less soluble, making the drug less bioavailable, drastically reducing its effectiveness at treating HIV.
After a number of years, the manufacturer was able to produce Form I under highly controlled conditions, and was able to once again sell the drug in a special refrigerated gel cap. Newer melt-extruded Form I Ritonavir was introduced to the market in 2010, which avoided the issue altogether.
Disappearing polymorphs have occured in a number of other chemicals, including Benzocaine Picrate, Cephadroxil, Paroxetine, Ranitidine and Xylitol sugar.

UNIVERSITY OF SUNSHINE COAST ROWE SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATION CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2025
Congratulations to Mr Cooper Barden, who has been awarded the Rowe Scientific Foundation Chemistry Scholarship 2025.
|
|
Hello, my name is Cooper. I am a 23-year-old University of the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay campus student, studying a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Biology and a Minor in Chemistry. My study interests are in Soil Chemistry, Aquaculture, Plant Biology, Microbiology, Agriculture Sciences and more - so environmental studies from atoms to plants.
My study goal this year is to complete a Special Research Project in one of my interested study areas, with the hope that if I enjoy it, to follow up with an Honor Program to pursue a career in Research. My ultimate career goal is to complete a PhD in plant related areas and to study extreme environments like Antarctica.
Thank you, Rowe Scientific, for your financial support through this Chemistry Scholarship. I am very grateful for your generosity in not only supporting me but others as well. This will help me financially this semester to ease the cost of my university studies, it will help me to purchase a laptop for my studies. It will also benefit me as I start to transition out of undergraduate studies, hopefully into postgraduate research or the workplace.
The Scholarship not only provides financial support but also provides motivation. I started my university studies by completing the universities bridging course, Tertiary Preparation Pathway, where I completed a Biology and Chemistry course. Since then I have worked my way to the last year of my degree and receiving this scholarship. This scholarship provides immense motivation to continue my degree and to pursue a career in research, and for that I am very grateful.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Dear Clients,
With the latest tariff changes coming from the USA, we are seeing a gradual increase in pricing, as tariffs impact raw materials imported into the USA. Naturally, this makes the manufactured product more expensive. Tracking of the AUD:USD foreign exchange variation, 12 months to the end of the March quarter, the Australian Dollar has declined by 4.7% (using 0.6 as base). This adds to the above, delivering a double impact on imported goods from the USA. (Similar figures are seen for the Euro, losing 5.6% and the UK Pound losing, 4.8%.).
The majority of our Asian suppliers also require payment in US dollars, so FX has an impact here as well.
The good news, we are well stocked! We will only pass on cost increases as the higher priced goods arrive.
As always, thank you for your business.
Peter Sommers and the Western Australian Team.
