Question:
“Mankind has successfully eradicated two diseases. What were they, when were their last documented cases, and when were they declared eradicated?”
The answer will be in the next edition of the Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd newsletter.
Did you know the answer to the last quiz question?
What was the first high explosive discovered by humankind?
Answer:
Fulminating gold.
Fulminating Gold was being prepared by alchemists by at least the 16ᵗʰ century, with the first reference to the substance made by Sebald Schwartzer in 1585 in his manuscript 'Chrysopoeia Schwaertzeriana'. Fulminating Gold detonates into a cloud of purple smoke, and this smoke was used to gold-plate objects in antiquity. While the cause of the purple cloud of smoke has long been speculated, work by Uszko et al. (2023) recently proved the purple smoke contains gold nanoparticles. Contrary to its name, Fulminating Gold does not contain the fulminate anion (CNO-), and is made of non-homogenous ammonium salts of gold-nitrogen compounds.

From Bin to Skin
Abstract:
"Elizabeth investigated if biodegradable packing peanuts can be recycled into a moisturiser. She made a variety of mixtures by combining packing peanuts and water in various concentrations. Elizabeth found that her packing peanut moisturiser was at first sticky but, after 24 hours when it had dried, it made the applied surface smoother."

Investigating the reproducibility of ball performance in various different tennis ball brands as a result of ball wear
Abstract:
"At the Australian Open, high-ranking tennis players complained about the durability of the tennis balls that were used. Elisabeth tested the effect of wear on the distance that different brands of tennis balls travel. Her results were consistent with the complaints of the players, with that brand faring the worst."

The Hive Project
Abstract:
"Aarohi was keen to develop a solution to the growing problem of homelessness. Thus, she spent a lot of time investigating a variety of materials that could be used for creating a thermally stable, sustainable, and durable prototype portable home. After careful selection of materials, she created a panel that would eventually be used to create a geodesic dome.

THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY ROWE SCIENTIFIC PTY LTD 2023 CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP
The following two students are the 2023 winners of the annual Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd Chemistry scholarships at The University of Sydney.
|
|
|
Mr Alex Loustau
"I’m a third-year student studying a Bachelor of Advanced Studies and a Bachelor of Advanced Science, majoring in Chemistry and Biochemistry. After I graduate, I want to complete honours in chemistry and provided I enjoy research, I would like to pursue post-graduate study in the discipline.
I chose to pursue chemistry because I love that it allows me to understand the ‘why’ behind biological processes. I also see chemistry research as not only a very rewarding career but one that has the potential to leave a positive impact on the world. It’s also just so fun and fascinating to learn about.
The Rowe Scientific Chemistry Scholarship will take a lot of financial pressure off for the coming year and will go a long way towards the living expenses for both me and my parents, allowing me to completely focus on my honours year. I want to thank you Rowe Scientific for your generosity, I am incredibly appreciative of your kindness."

Mr Hongyu Zhu
"I am a fourth-year student studying the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Advanced Studies majoring in Biology and Chemistry. I chose to study these fields as you can investigate questions about life and nature. I want to explore them in more detail in my future career as a scientist. The Rowe Scientific Chemistry Scholarship has helped me to alleviate the financial pressure I was facing at University. It is also encouraging me to progress my career path and study with higher motivation."

NEW SOUTH WALES
Dear Clients.
It’s hard to believe we are already two months into the new year. We hope you are all settling well into 2024 and that the year has so far been kind to you.
February has been an interesting month, and was a time of celebration for many in the STEM community, with the 11th of February 2024 marking the 9ᵗʰ International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This day recognises the significant contributions of women in STEM, and aims to promote equality and the empowerment of women by increasing access to education and participation in STEM by women and girls around the globe. As a trusted scientific supplier in Australia, we are extremely fortunate to know and work with so many wonderful women in STEM across the nation, and we are proud to support them in their work. In February we were also privileged to partake in training with visitors from VELP Scientifica in relation to their Analytical Instruments product range; including Elemental Analysers, Digestion and Distillation Units and Solvent Extractors. For our clients in the analytical testing space, please feel free to take a look at this brochure which details the range available from VELP and how they can be used to develop, streamline and automate your testing processes. Of course, if you would like some guidance or assistance in locating a suitable item for your testing requirements, please don’t hesitate to contact our team directly, so that we can discuss this with you further.
Please also keep in mind that we are running a special Cryogenic February Sale. This is valid only while current stock lasts, so make sure you get in quickly to secure this special price.
All the best from: Kathryn, Ari, Cindy, Diana, Dylan, Hayden, John, Julia and Kai

WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Dear Clients.
I can feel that we are all back at work, as the pace has increased after a slowing December. Obviously we all benefitted from the break and now are back in work mode. I am ecstatic to announce that Magid Sawiris has joined us as an Account Manager. Magid has a Degree of Applied Chemistry and has worked extensively as an Analytical Chemist in the mining industry. This history makes him the perfect candidate to call on our Southern Goldfields region and Kalgoorlie clients. We will indoctrinate him in the ways of Rowe Scientific before personally introducing him to you. I experienced today the most significant change to our business since COVID, asking one of my Account Managers which VELP stirrer they would quote a client. The answer?……Whatever we have in stock. Too many empty promises about availability, you the client want it now! You will be pleased to know that a significant order of VELP stock arrives as this goes to press.
Our motto is to keep you supplied with the scientific items you need to do your work. We offer an extensive range from a large stock, at competitive prices, with exceptional service.
Thank you for your support.
We wish you all the best, and stay safe.
All the best from: Peter Sommers and the Western Australian Team.
