UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN QUEENSLAND ROWE SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATION CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2024

Congratulations to Ms Mackenzie Lukritz, who has been awarded the Rowe Scientific Foundation Chemistry Scholarship.

In Mackenzie's own words:

"Science has always been a passion of mine. I love to learn about new things and delve deeper into the structure of compounds that the human eye cannot see.

Within science, I was drawn to chemistry throughout high school. Once I commenced university, I realised the vast range of applications that chemistry has within the food industry. This is becoming a growing interest that I am keen to continue exploring in my studies. The composition and structure of food is fascinating and can influence so many things from visual appearance, to eating quality.

Image_16_93fe162beb39477395f41a9e24d9e437

Some of my interests include brewing processes and learning about the equipment that is used to perform food analysis. I enjoy the study of food chemistry as it is very logical, and I find I work much better when there is an answer I can work towards. I think that we forget that science is all around us.

There is still so much for us to learn and discover. I am so thankful for this scholarship as it will allow me to pursue my study goals with less concern about financial stresses."

THE UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND ROWE SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATION CHEMISTRY AWARD 3rd YEAR LABORATORY PRIZE

DEAKIN UNIVERSITY ROWE SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATION CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2024

Congratulations to Mr John Landini, who has been awarded the Rowe Scientific Foundation Chemistry Scholarship.

Image_19_bd4be8f79f0745a68ef38a98e388bdb4

In John's own words:

John was asked: what do you find interesting about chemistry?

"My interest in chemistry began when I was around 8 years old. Unbeknownst to my mother, my oldest sister taught me how to light a match. I marvelled at this and simply could not use my logic at the time to develop an intuitive explanation of how the timber stick could catch on fire seemingly from nothing. I later learnt this was not only explained by ‘science,’ but in particular a division called ‘chemistry.’

Over the years until present, my deep interest in chemistry still prompts me to marvel at its various expressions, either in the lab environment or in more complex instances like nature.

This is what I find most interesting about chemistry – it’s fundamentally everywhere around us, it’s expressed in a near infinite number of forms and levels of complexity, and we just have to be observant and inquisitive to find it. These I believe are the core attributes of a scientist."

GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY ROWE SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATION CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2024

Congratulations to Mr Joshua Howard, who has been awarded the Rowe Scientific Foundation Chemistry Scholarship.

In Joshua's own words:

"Acknowledgements such as these are encouragement to continue along what can at times be a challenging, yet rewarding, career path.

I am very honoured and grateful to have accepted the generous offer of the Rowe Scientific Foundation Chemistry Scholarship for 2024.

I have always had an interest in the physical sciences, and my ambition is to contribute in some humble way to the advancement of scientific knowledge and humankind.

Image_20_4609e7c0606845ddaf1406ab01de8ec3

I believe problems of global magnitude are solvable and science is key to achieving the future we all want.

Thank you"

UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE ROWE SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATION CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2024

Congratulations to the following recipients of the Rowe Scientific Foundation Chemistry Scholarship 2024 at University of Adelaide. Well done to you both.

Image_21_aa7f819e552849a68af903418e07d82b

Ms Matilda O'Brien

In Matilda's own words:

"I am a double
chemistry major with ambitions to pursue a career in environmental and analytical science. My first introduction to a professional research laboratory was under the supervision of Dr Cameron Shearer, working on a project aimed at testing the photocatalytic ability of semiconductor quantum dots to degrade PFAS molecules.

Not only did this experience equip me with vital research skills and a deeper insight into the structure of postgraduate programs, but it also provided me with an immense appreciation for the collaborative efforts that go into conducting experiments, writing papers, and advancing science as a whole.

I am ravenous for knowledge and experience, and thanks to the Rowe scholarship I am one step closer to sinking my teeth into this rapidly expanding field."

Mr Art Hussnain

In Art's own words:

"How deeply does chemistry extend its arms into human affairs! This romantic quotation of Mendeleev, author of the periodic table, by a school chemistry teacher back in Moscow positioned the science as the glue between other disciplines, a place it still holds in my scheme of things.

Our family moved to Australia in 2017. It was a huge effort from a small family, just me and my parents, and I am proud to say we’ve done well. Right now, I am completing my undergraduate qualification and looking for an HDR project at the interface of organic, physical, computational, and biological chemistry."

Image_23_be821dfb11af44678c2247ad1ebe1696

In  Queenie's own words:

“I have always found chemistry fascinating ever since starting to learn about it in high school. My current studies have led me to discover computer modelling and its applications in biochemistry, especially how it can help to predict protein binding to drugs, toxins and other compounds. In my current project I am applying this knowledge to look for new analgesic compounds to treat chronic neurological pain by simulating protein binding to specific receptor sites, which I have found very interesting. I look forward to developing my skills further in this area through the rest of my studies.

Thank you to The Rowe Scientific Foundation."
