Answer: The hyoid bone. Located in the neck between the lower jaw and thyroid cartilage, this small U-shaped bone is suspended by muscles and ligaments rather than forming a joint with another bone. It supports the tongue and plays an important role in swallowing, speaking and breathing.

Dear Rowe Scientific Foundation, I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for selecting me as a recipient of the Rowe Scientific Metallurgy Scholarship for the 2026 academic year. I was thrilled to learn that I received this honour and am deeply appreciative of your generous support.
I am currently in my first year, studying a Bachelor of Mineral Processing at Curtin. I have always been passionate about working on mine sites and different ore types. I grew up in a small mining town until we moved for high school and have always been interested in working in the mining field and have been interested in mineral processing. This scholarship will help me focus more fully on my studies and practical placements.
Receiving this scholarship means a great deal to me because it will alleviate my financial stress and allow me to increase my time spent studying as well as helping me move to Kalgoorlie next year. I am incredibly thankful to the Rowe Scientific Foundation for receiving the 2025 Rowe Scientific Scholarship acknowledging my hard work and interest in chemistry as I complete my undergraduate chemistry degree at The University of Queensland. The scholarship has been incredibly useful in supporting my university studies in Brisbane after relocating from the Sunshine Coast.
I have always loved learning and been passionate about STEM. It was in my first semester of university that I gained a true passion for chemistry. I have enjoyed my chemistry courses immensely and love being in the lab and gaining hands on experience that takes you out of a lecture.

Even though I have only been here - in Australia - for a single semester, studying chemistry here has already given me a whole new perspective on science.
Back in Vietnam, my high school chemistry background was highly theoretical; I spent countless hours solving complex organic mechanisms and lengthy analytical problems on paper. However, coming to Australia has completely transformed how I learn. For the first time, I am stepping into a modern laboratory, handling professional equipment, performing real titrations, and learning how to document my findings through formal lab reports.
This transition from paper to practice has been incredibly exciting for me. It made me realize how much I still have to learn and grow as a aspiring scientist. I truly feel that Monash is the perfect environment to nurture my growth. I hope to make the most of these practical learning opportunities to build a strong foundation, with the ultimate goal of contributing to green and sustainable research that can benefit society.

There's something beautiful about learning something, then seeing something and being able to apply it. Those little moments, where you turn over a shampoo bottle and see an ester or a hydrocarbon...or when someone asks you about a coloured flame and your mind dances back to emission spectra make chemistry.
In high school, my studies of chemistry resulted in a perfect score, knowing all well that the subject would not contribute more than (0.4 of an aggregate ~0.05 atar points) to my atar.
As such, I found myself in the seat of chemistry 1051, where my outlook shifted, and the subject deepened and revealed itself even more. Each second week, being able to see the connection between my theoretical studies and my labs has been genuinely rewarding, and what first felt impossible and fatiguing, now has become comfortable and exciting.

Chemistry has always fascinated me as the science that underpins everything, from the medicines we take to the materials that shape our world. CHM2911 at Monash deepened this fascination by exploring the molecular design, synthesis, structure, and reactivity of carbon-based molecules, alongside the rich world of transition metal and organometallic chemistry. In particular, seeing how organic and inorganic chemistry are not isolated disciplines but deeply interconnected.
Learning to design and formulate the syntheses of compounds using both organic and inorganic processes, and applying spectroscopic methods to analyse them, gave me a hands-on appreciation of how chemists actually think and work. The laboratory component, in particular, transformed abstract theory into something tangible and real.

Hart McKelvie Beckett Prize CHM2951 Environmental Chemistry – Water

My passion for chemistry comes from the way it helps me understand how different parts of the real world interact with each other, especially in natural environmental systems, where even little chemical changes can affect the whole ecosystems and the communities around them.
Before studying CHM2951, from the point of view of a chemical engineering student, I mostly saw water chemistry as something that was done in the laboratory such as testing and analysing water samples. Yet, having my actual chance to go into the field, collect some real data and report on my own findings has completely changed my view about water chemistry as I first thought. It helped me realise that environmental chemistry is not that tedious and instead it shows the hidden story as well as what actually going on behind each river or water system.
These experiences made me see water not just as water but as a system shaped by chemistry where the interactions of human activity and the natural weather condition can constantly affect the health of river and ecosystem at that area.

One of my biggest passions is science education and communication. During my first two years of study at Monash, I worked at Edtech company Edrolo on Chemistry and Mathematics resources, with the aim of encouraging a passion for Chemistry in students, and empowering students to engage critically with scientific material throughout their lives. Currently, I tutor a number of VCE Chemistry students. My absolute favourite feeling isn’t just seeing the lightbulb moments, but when students become genuinely curious about chemistry, ask questions, and make creative connections on their own.
Initiated by fellow student Katherine Noonan and organised by Mike Grace, I had the privilege of speaking with soil and agricultural scientist Cassandra Schefe for our presentation about Regenerative Agriculture. On top of being helpful for our presentation, connecting with Cassie provided fascinating insights into the history and current perceptions of the movement in Australia. Ultimately, I was left with a huge sense of pride in Australian farmers for being trailblazers in sustainable agriculture, and much more confidence to engage with farmers in my wider community about these issues. Additionally, the unit has provided me with a greater understanding and appreciation of the wetland environments in my local area and beyond.

Youatt Prize CHM3930 Medicinal Chemistry

Growing up in regional New South Wales, I have observed how geographical barriers limit access to healthcare in regional communities. In studying intellectual property law, I learned how regulatory structures including compulsory licensing can be utilised to support greater access to medicines. This sparked my interest in using my interdisciplinary skills from my law and chemistry studies to drive policy change around access to medicines in regional communities.
I was most inspired by CHM3930’s radiopharmaceutical content. Particularly, Associate Professor Manja Kubeil’s lectures on research into novel therapeutic and diagnostic matched radiopharmaceuticals, combined with Associate Professor Benjamin Fraser’s lectures on ANSTO’s role in developing new radiopharmaceuticals and transporting on-market radiopharmaceuticals around Australia. These lectures illustrated how ongoing chemistry research improves healthcare access, as delivery of radiopharmaceuticals by ANSTO improves access to diagnostic imaging in regional and rural areas, while combined theranostic radiopharmaceuticals reduces the travel burden on individuals to receive treatment. This has inspired me to explore specialisations in the radiopharmaceutical and oncology sector and shown me how my chemistry knowledge, combined with policy skills from my law degree, could drive improved access to oncology medicines in regional communities.

In Sasha's own words:
Thinking back to high school and first year, chemistry was something I just enjoyed learning, but as my understanding of the complexities and nuances grew I became more interested in how chemistry can be used to solve specific problems and how understanding the fundamental theories and driving forces is key to this. CHM3911 sharpened that curiosity in why systems behave the way they do, and how it underpins technological challenges today.
Through CHM3911, I’ve gotten to explore both aspects, and see how understanding first principles and systems on an elemental level is vital to be able to tweak and improve processing, production, and technology. Having worked in Australia's mineral industry, I was familiar with flotation and separation processing on a surface level. CHM3911 allowed me to uncover the mechanisms driving these processes, revealing how physical chemistry is used to optimise industrial performance. I now see how improving processing isn't just an engineering problem, but also chemical, and it’s something I can contribute to.
This unit showed me that many everyday technologies rely on physical chemists to function. Equipped with these skills and knowledge, I'm excited to continue developing my expertise to make an impact in industries shaping our future.

Dickson Prize CHM3941 Advanced Inorganic Chemistry

In Elaine's own words:
Inorganic chemistry has always been the most interesting field of chemistry to me and the area in which I would love to pursue a career in research in. The vast diversity of colours, reactivities, and other unique properties such as magnetism and coordination geometry preferences exhibited by the various metals on the periodic table and the unlimited range of unique molecules that can be synthesised from them has always enthralled me. Learning how a common analytical technique such as NMR could be applied to nearly every element on the periodic table beyond just the common few that I had seen previously, and the ways isotopes of different abundance and nuclear spin produced different spectral patterns was both deeply interesting and a highly valuable skill to obtain for a future in research for product characterisation. Delving deeper into the mechanisms behind ligand exchange reactions and how mechanisms could be determined through different measurable parameters and experimental data was also of great interest to me.
By taking this unit and developing an understanding of these analytical approaches as well as developing air sensitive techniques when learning about and handling organolithium reagents which were previously unheard of to me, I feel much more equipped for a career in inorganic research and have been inspired to keep pushing further to learn as much as I can about all the different avenues inorganic research can take me.

Kaiya Neil
A curious forensic science student combining a love of chemistry, biology and investigation with a strong focus on future service.
Kaiya is studying a Bachelor of Forensic Science at Griffith University, drawn to a degree that brings together her fascination with science, problem solving and criminal investigations. Originally from Cairns, moving to Brisbane for university has been a significant step, opening up access to modern facilities, new academic opportunities and a broader university experience. Her interest in forensic science is shaped by a love of chemistry and biology, as well as a desire to contribute to work that supports victims and helps bring justice through careful investigation. Outside of study, Kaiya works as a Student Ambassador for Griffith, where she connects with prospective students and shares the opportunities available at the university. She also enjoys reading, playing netball and spending time with friends and family. Looking ahead, Kaiya hopes to apply for the Australian Federal Police Graduate Program, with interests in areas such as crime scene investigation, drug analysis and disaster victim identification.
“I have had more chances to learn and grow than I would have ever had without them.”
Kaiya is continuing to build her scientific knowledge, confidence and experience as she works towards a future in forensic science.

Brendan Cox is studying a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Chemistry, at Western Sydney University and has achieved a GPA of 5.47. After initially pursuing mechanical engineering, he discovered that chemistry better suited his interests and abilities. He has particularly enjoyed Advanced Physical Chemistry, including its focus on quantum mechanics.
Brendan expressed genuine surprise and gratitude at receiving the Rowe Scientific Chemistry Scholarship. His goals are to graduate as a qualified chemist, achieve strong academic results and complete relevant work experience. He is also considering postgraduate study, potentially undertaking a master’s degree after completing his undergraduate qualification.
"My favourite subject thus far has been Advanced Physical Chemistry – though it was the hardest subject I have experienced, it was definitely the most interesting. The main focus was quantum mechanics, which provided insight into the fundamental mechanics of the atom and bled into every other area of the course. Being the most difficult subject, it proved to be quite rewarding when I would finally understand the theories behind the science and apply what I thought to be a completely useless concept to everyday life. You don’t ever realise how complex the atomic model, and even just visible light, is until you complete this subject."

My passion for science has been driven by a desire to understand the genetic and molecular mechanisms that underpin life and exploring how genomic technologies can be harnessed to solve complex biological problems.
Thanks to my supportive family, my hard work is paying off. Receiving the Rowe Scientific Scholarship is a huge honour and gives me vital support heading into my honours studies next year. "Receiving the Rowe Scientific Award for Excellence in Biomedical Science was a tremendous honour and a meaningful recognition of the dedication and perseverance that went into my undergraduate studies.
The timing of the award could not have been better, as I used the prize money to purchase a new laptop to support my transition into a Master of Medical and Health Science by Research at Edith Cowan University. My research investigates how metabolic syndrome and chronic sympathetic nervous system overactivity contribute to early aortic remodelling in hypertension.
I am incredibly grateful to the Rowe Scientific Foundation for investing in emerging biomedical researchers. Receiving this award was a real vote of confidence at the beginning of my Master's journey, and both the financial support and the recognition have made that transition a little easier."

Having grown up on an orchard in Stanthorpe, situated on the Granite Belt within the Southern Downs region of Queensland, I have always been surrounded by the practical applications of chemistry in regard to food production and agricultural technology. As a result, I have developed an interest in the more technical aspects of food production, which has led to an interest in food chemistry and the manufacturing of associated products.
During my high school studies, I gravitated towards organic chemistry and also completed a Certificate II in Wine Industry Operations, focusing on wine chemistry and quality assurance. During my second year of university, the courses of Food Chemistry and Principles of Food Analysis enhanced my depth of knowledge and has further guided my aspiration to pursue a career in the field of food production and food technology. I look forward to graduating with my double major in Food Science and Plant Agricultural Science by the end of 2026, and I would like to thank Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd for providing me with this scholarship.

It’s great to be emerging from winter with some chill off the air and many of us enjoying the pointy end of the AFL season.
Since our last newsletter, we’ve welcomed Anusha and Caleb to the Melbourne team. With years selling scientific instrumentation, and a background in Molecular Genetics, Anusha is our new External Account Manager. Many of you will be hearing from Anusha shortly - please join us in making Anusha welcome. Caleb joined our warehouse team in July and has been on a learning curve navigating warehouse functions and first year uni. We wish Anusha and Caleb every success in their respective roles.
We said farewell to Darren Taylor who retired in July. Many thanks to Darren for his 3 years with the warehouse team. Enjoy every moment of retirement, and the golfing!
We continue to navigate the challenges stemming from the Middle East crisis. Our Purchasing team and Product Group Managers are steadfastly committed to ensuring inventory is not impacted. The recent expansion of our Melbourne warehouse has enabled us to increase our holdings of critical items.
