In Haresh's own words:
"As a structural engineering student born and raised in Papua New Guinea, I am passionate about building essential infrastructure for my people back home. My purpose is to design and build more schools and hospitals, and improve current transport connectivity (roads/highways). My studies have strengthened my understanding of engineering fundamentals, systems, materials and analysis which allowed me to work on larger scale academic projects. Currently, my group is designing a bridge between Bulimba and Bowen Hills as a solution to the growing congestion and poor transport network. Through engineering, I hope to support my local community while playing a vital role in shaping the nation’s future development.
I am writing to showcase my heartfelt gratitude for being the recipient of this scholarship. This has left a significant impact on my education both financially and mentally. It not only eases the financial burden but has motivated me to excel further. This scholarship has inspired me to strive for higher academic achievements and make a start on working towards my career goals. The scholarship played a crucial role in landing my first role as an undergraduate engineer at Sike Consulting. This has meant the world to me and kickstarted my ambitious engineering career.
As I have commenced my professional career, combining my academic knowledge has allowed me to deepen my knowledge while applying the skills taught in classes. Looking ahead, my goal is to use my experience and education to contribute to the growth and development of Papua New Guinea.
As mentioned in my personal statement, I plan to build a construction company where I can provide affordable homes to my people and work on civil projects. The knowledge and skills gained through this program will help me to address key challenges facing our country and to be part of the innovative solutions that will propel Papua New Guinea forward. I have been particularly thrilled by specific activities in my program, such as making concrete and learning about sluice gates in lab practical. A Study of Plasma Antenna Behaviour with Various Coupling Alternatives
Plasma antennas are a promising solution in radio communications. Possessing the ability to deactivate a plasma antenna offers several unique advantages and applications, notably for stealth. Unfortunately, challenges with efficiency and practicality have hindered development as current technologies are impractical. This study focused on trialling a custom inductive coupling collar to improve plasma antenna stability and connection. The coupling design is an original prototype unique to this experiment. We compared the signal voltage of plasma and metal antennas at 666 kHz using either capacitive or inductive coupling. Our primary comparison was between the traditional capacitive metal antenna and our inductive plasma design. There was a clear contrast between the two, with the metal antenna producing a higher signal voltage by several orders of magnitude. The metal antennas consistently outperformed the plasma configurations, and capacitive coupling proved a more effective medium than inductive. The results also showed that antenna medium has a greater impact than coupling. Our observations suggest potential for resolving the underlying drawbacks of plasma antennas and developing a desirable communications system. More research is required, and we propose a follow up experiment.

This project involved designing a durable, eco-friendly egg carton to reduce egg breakage and help lower rising egg costs. Inspired by the need for better protection during transport, the group engineered a reinforced carton using materials like corrugated cardboard, biodegradable foam for insulation, and magnets for a secure lock. The design prioritised strength, temperature resistance, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. After testing under real-world conditions, the final product proved to be a practical and reliable solution for safely storing and transporting eggs.

From Waste to Wonder: Creating a Metal -CO2 Battery
Research was conducted based on the ability of CO2 dissolved in an aqueous solution to conduct electricity with a Metal, CO2 galvanic-voltaic battery. The aim of this experiment was to sufficiently reduce CO2 to produce formate ions. This shows that CO2 has completely participated in a chemical reaction that results in the production of electrical energy whilst being reduced to other valuable products (formate).
The experiment involved the use of the metal Aluminium as an anode and baking soda (NaHCO3) dissolved electrolyte solution. Furthermore, a Nickel Iron coated stainless steel cathode was used during the very first attempts of creating the battery. This is because NiFe acts as a catalyst in reduction reactions. However, it supports only oxygen reduction reactions (OER). Therefore, a Tin (Sn) cathode was used as it acts as an efficient cathode and catalyst in CO2 reduction reactions. A salt bridge with NaHCO3 dissolved was used. A voltmeter was used to measure the voltage produced. Moreover, a digital pH meter was used to gain evidence of the production of formate ions. The pH should increase due to the presence of formate ions.
Three attempts of the battery which involved the use of Al anode, Sn cathode and NaHCO3 electrolyte were created. These three attempts each had 2 trials, one involved bubbled CO2 and the other has no CO2 bubbles. In all the trials, the pH fell. The cells with CO2 bubbles had slight fluctuations in the pH fall. The cells without CO2 fell consistently. This indicates that formate ions, or even hydroxide ions (OH) were not produced. Instead, it shows the production of H+ ions and carbonic acid. This shows that CO2 was not sufficiently reduced. The voltage gained was also recorded within the results tables. The pH and the voltage gained shows that, though CO2 was not properly reduced, it did chemically react within the cell. The above findings shows that it is necessary to create a proper electrochemical cell to get the expected results.

Assessing the Accuracy and Interpretability of a Recurrent Neural Network for Breast Cancer Classification and Molecular Subtyping Using Ribonucleic Acid-Sequencing Data

Ribonucleic acid sequencing gene expression profiling offers unprecedented opportunities for early, molecular-level cancer diagnosis, yet most machine learning approaches lack the interpretability required for clinical adoption.This investigation examined how accurately a recurrent neural network could classify gene expression data to distinguish malignant from healthy breast tissue, determine molecular subtypes, and reveal key gene expression patterns. Specifically, classification was performed across the four major molecular subtypes of breast cancer; Luminal A, Luminal B, Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2-enriched, and Basal-like. A multi-task bidirectional long short-term memory model was trained on The Cancer Genome Atlas Breast Cancer dataset (1,109 malignant, 109 ‘solid tissue normal’ samples) following rigorous preprocessing (including biological outlier validation, differential expression analysis, and correlation filtering) that reduced 20,530 initial genes to 5,000 discriminative features.
The model achieved 98.2% malignancy classification accuracy with 100% sensitivity and 70.6% specificity, and attained 77.6% accuracy in subtype classification. Gene-level explainability identified newly emerging breast cancer genetic biomarkers, namely transferrin, ADP ribosylation factor interacting protein 2, and moesin, supporting recently reported roles of iron metabolism and cytoskeletal regulation in breast cancer. Confusion between Luminal A and B subtypes reflected genuine biological overlap rather than model limitations.
These findings demonstrate that recurrent neural networks can achieve clinically applicable accuracy for transcriptomic breast cancer diagnosis whilst providing interpretable, gene-level insights, thereby addressing critical barriers to artificial intelligence adoption in oncology.

Colour vs Taste
This project investigates whether the colour of a drink influences how people perceive its taste. Although taste is detected by the tongue, research shows that our senses work together and that visual cues such as colour can shape our expectations and flavour perception.
In this experiment, participants were given samples of the same drink that were coloured differently using food dye. They were asked to identify or describe the taste of each sample and record their perceptions. The aim was to determine whether participants would report different tastes even though the drinks were identical in flavour. The results were analysed to see if certain colours consistently influenced taste perception.
The findings suggest that colour can significantly affect how people interpret flavour, demonstrating that the brain integrates visual information with taste when forming sensory experiences. Understanding these sensory interactions helps explain how expectations influence perception and has applications in food design, marketing, and sensory science.

For my Honours project, I am quantifying the flux of methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide from decomposing macroalgae (beach wrack). This study helps better understand greenhouse gas cycles and assess pathways to mitigate climate change. Thank you for the opportunity that this scholarship will provide me.

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for being selected as a recipient for a 2026 Rowe Scientific Scholarship.
I raised my two children on an organic, regenerative market garden in rural Tasmania. In those days I also worked long hours both on and off the farm, there was no prospect of allocating time to learning.
I have always wanted to be a researcher, and completing an honours project is a critical step in this journey. However, the decision to devote myself to this study means managing on reduced income. This scholarship helps ensure that my financial needs are met and I can focus on my research. I am honoured to be chosen, and your demonstrated support for my aspirations is deeply encouraging.
I currently work with the Sustainability Office as a Sustainability Ambassador (a role I helped create) and also volunteer as a Nature Positive Universities’ Student Ambassador, contributing to Murdoch Universities’ plans to reduce our Biodiversity footprint. This year I have also re-activated the previously defunct Murdoch Environmental Restoration Group, a group of student volunteers dedicated to protecting wildlife and restoring natural areas on campus.
I am aware that being able to spend time pursuing higher education is a privilege. I will ensure my research now and in the future is focussed on acquiring knowledge that will make a real difference to preserving southwest WA’s unique riverine biodiversity and improved environmental outcomes.

I am very grateful to be a recipient of a Rowe Scientific Scholarship. I am a Murdoch University student embarking on an Honours project beginning in Semester 2 of this year. Thank you for providing this Scholarship to support my biochemistry Honours research project.
I am Perth born and raised and have been conducting chemistry experiments since I was very young, including creating my own recipes (with a great amount of trial and error involved). I also have always enjoyed spending time in rural and remote parts of Western Australia, so I feel personally connected to my current and upcoming biochemical research in the agricultural sphere. I am very excited to be approaching the final year of my Undergraduate degree - I believe undertaking an Honours project will enhance my education, my research skills, and my preparedness to later peruse Postgraduate study in the field.
I love my current casual job in Murdoch University’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team, where I get to make positive changes to the university from behind the scenes; however, I also understand that Honours is a more immersive and intensive experience than other Undergraduate years, and so I appreciate that this scholarship will provide me with the budgeting flexibility to work fewer hours and focus more on my research.

Thank you so much for considering my application and awarding me this scholarship.
My love of chemistry began in grade 11, when I was first introduced to analytical techniques, such as liquid chromatography and electrophoresis. Since then, I have enjoyed broadening my understanding of these techniques as I study at UniSC. I began my degree, a Bachelor of Science, in 2023, with a major in Chemistry and minor in Biology. My third and final year of university will be this year (2026) and I am looking forward to the range of classes that I will be completing, including Analytical Science Physical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry.
I have some exposure to a laboratory setting having worked a year full time and then 2 years casually in an analytical laboratory and have just recently completed a 3-month vacation program at the Ampol Laboratory in Lytton, Brisbane. This work experience has solidified my confidence in chemical understanding, and I can absolutely see myself pursuing a career in the analytical chemical field.
In my final year I look to continue working casually whilst completing all my studies. Balancing university and work as well as my personal life commitments, including church, means that I am somewhat limited in personal funding. Your scholarship will help me see through my last year, supporting me with expenses such as fuel, food and other essentials, so that I can give my all to my studies. I greatly appreciate that you care for those interested in the chemistry field and have given so many students the opportunity to be supported by you and I thank you once again for choosing me as the recipient.

"My name is Lee Jansson and I recently was offered the Rowe Scientific Scholarship and the requirements are that I send RMIT scholarships a photo of myself and 100 words about my chemistry interests.
During my studies I have developed a growing passion in chemistry, particularly in organic and green chemistry. My studies have involved exploring all forms of chemistry from organic synthesis to analytical techniques. I am especially interested in how chemistry can be applied to environmental and industrial challenges such as the growing problem of plastic pollution as well as finding better ways to monitor and actively enrich our ecosystems. I continue to dive deeper into my applied science project which is attempting to functionalise Cholera Toxin to enable it to bind to silicon via a PEG cross linker to see if we could verify that stem cells have been differentiated by e-stim."

"I commenced my Bachelor of Science in 2024 having no prior experience in chemistry. In my first year, chemistry was a compulsory subject for me, and I didn’t quite know what to expect. I ended up having an amazing experience in labs, classes and lectures where I thoroughly enjoyed the theoretical and practical aspects of chemistry. I knew I wanted to pursue chemistry throughout the rest of my degree.
Encouraged by my lecturers at the time, I decided to major in chemistry. In my second year, I discovered an interest in synthetic chemistry. Compared to the general, analytical types of chemistry we are exposed to in first year, both the practical and theoretical side of synthetic chemistry fascinated me and challenged me to think more creatively. Now in my third year, I’ve had various research opportunities which have allowed me to expand on these interests, mainly through research focusing on organic synthesis using photocatalysis."

I am a life-long science enthusiast who discovered my true passion in chemistry and have since dedicated myself to it. I am particularly drawn to analytical chemistry, especially instrumentation and method development. I enjoy interpreting data, solving complex analytical challenges, and understanding how chemical analysis shapes real-world outcomes.
Recently, I began my journey as a graduate chemist, analysing trace mineral elements. I am focused on building hands-on skills and practical industry experience, with the ultimate goal of leveraging this practical foundation to drive future scientific innovation.

Hoping this finds you refreshed after the Easter break, and hopefully we still have some sunny Autumn days ahead.
We extend our warmest wishes to our State Manager Garry Wrede, who retired on April 10. We thank Garry for nearly 20 years of hard work and commitment in this role. He will be greatly missed by colleagues and clients alike. Garry’s front door may already indicate “Gone Fishing”, and when the fish aren’t biting, he has extensive travel plans. Enjoy your next chapter Garry!
Christine Barclay (Account Manager with the Melbourne team for nine years) steps into the role of State Manager. Christine and has been working alongside Garry for several months and with big shoes to fill, is excited for the new role.
With the evolving situation in the Middle East and impact on supply chains, we are working closely with our manufacturers to mitigate shortfalls. If your local Rowe Scientific warehouse doesn’t hold the stock you require, it’s likely to be available in at least one of our five national warehouses. We are committed to ensuring that supply to your laboratory is uninterrupted. Our stock levels reflect this. Where possible, we encourage you to place forward orders for critical items. Please reach out to your Account Manager so that we can facilitate and help manage your inventory requirements.
In March, we attended the WIOA conference in Bendigo. It was great to see familiar and new faces alike, and thank-you for dropping by the stand. In May (28-29) we will be attending the DIAA Victoria Conference in Melbourne, followed by FoodPro 2026, 26-29 July in Melbourne. We look forward to seeing you.

Dear Clients,
We live in interesting times.
Unlike during COVID, with many industries not producing their usual production volumes, we are not seeing any stock availability issues coming from the market. Rather the impacts are all coming from freight. Both in terms of availability of carriage and cost of the same.
Airlines routinely carry commercial freight in their passenger planes. With reduced flights and increased occupancy, this has severely restricted their ability to carry freight. We see shipments being bounced off flights, producing the resultant delays.
Freight by sea is taking longer, as many vessels are not using the Suez canal for passage via the Red sea, and are instead sailing around Africa. Greater sailing distances (fuel) and again, delays.
Domestically, the greatest impact (after floods and cyclones) is freight costs. We receive letters weekly from our suppliers and our outbound couriers that they are either applying a levy where previously they have not, or that their fuel levy has increased....again.
Please understand that delivering your goods is NOT free, and appreciate that we may have to vary current arrangements.
