In Shannon's own words:

"I am honoured to receive this award. Thank you to the donors for their generosity.

I have just completed a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Applied Chemistry and Biological Sciences. My research focused on the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of a rare fungal disease affecting Australian reptiles. Analytical chemistry techniques have proven useful in my ongoing research to analyse biological tissue samples and determine chemical changes caused by disease and other environmental factors.

In the future, I aspire to educate and inspire future generations of chemists by completing a Master of Teaching (Secondary), which I shall commence in Semester 2, 2023. I look forward to sharing my passion for chemistry and biology with future scientists and researchers.”

Well done Shannon, from all of us here at Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN QUEENSLAND ROWE SCIENTIFIC PTY LTD CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2023

Congratulations to Ms Lisa Hopkins, the current recipient of the University of Southern Queensland, Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd Chemistry Scholarship.

"Food chemistry interests me as it is important in food quality to determine appropriate risk mitigation of food products by accessing their components, properties, microstructure and any changes that happen over their shelf life. Chemistry gives the ability to solve food-related problems; the problem can be pulled apart and analysed. Accessing these factors during the development of a new food product helps ensure that the product stays at a high quality for its entire shelf life. This means the food will continue to taste great and be safe to eat. I am only at the beginning of my chemistry learning and am excited about being able to apply what I have learnt when innovating future food products."

Well done Lisa.

UNIVERSITY OF THE SUNSHINE COAST ROWE SCIENTIFIC PTY LTD CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2023

Congratulations to Ms Samantha-Marie Duggan who has been awarded the Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd Chemistry Scholarship 2023.

Image_13

Ms Samantha-Marie Duggan

In Samantha's own words:

“I am writing this letter to express my sincere gratitude for the Rowe Scientific Chemistry Scholarship awarded to me in my studies at UniSC. This scholarship will support me as I continue my education and pursue my career goals.

I am currently completing a major in Chemistry and a minor in Mathematics as part of my Bachelor of Science degree. I have found the degree incredibly rewarding and have gained a deep understanding of the chemical sciences and their applications. For one year now, I have been volunteering in the research labs at the UniSC Sippy Downs campus, specialising in analytical chemistry.

This volunteer work has allowed me to apply the skills and knowledge I have gained so far in my degree to industry work, furthering my understanding of how scientific principles can be applied to benefit the public.

My career goal is to become an analytical chemist and contribute to the development of new technologies that will benefit the scientific community. I believe that the skills and knowledge I am acquiring through my studies at UniSC will be invaluable in achieving this goal. I intend to continue my studies after gaining industry experience, returning to UniSC to complete a Master of Science, with a focus in chemistry.

I cannot thank you enough for your generosity and support. Your scholarship has made it possible for me to focus on my studies without financial strain, such as covering the costs of textbooks and transport. Removing this financial barrier also enables me to continue volunteering in the research labs at UniSC, enriching my studies with industry experience. This scholarship has given me a sense of motivation to work harder and achieve my academic and career goals.

Once again, thank you for the support and for investing in my future. I am grateful for this opportunity. Thank you.”

Well done Samantha-Marie.

SOUTHERN CROSS UNIVERSITY ROWE SCIENTIFIC PTY LTD CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2023

Congratulations to Mr Craig Bell who has been awarded the Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd Chemistry Scholarship.

Image_14

Mr Craig Bell standing outside the Southern Cross University, National Marine Science Centre.

"My project in collaboration with NSW DPI, will involve the application of bioelectrical impedance analysis on sharks caught on SMART drumlines.

Here we can estimate parameters such as body fat, muscle mass, and total body water, which are essential for growth and health. This novel technique sends a safe, small electrical current through the body to measure the impedance (resistance and reactance) of biological tissue.

The procedure does not harm any species, lasting a few seconds and provides a phase angle value. This is a measure of the ability of cells to act as capacitors. The greater the ability of cell membranes to hold a charge, the healthier the cell and the higher the phase angle which is a desirable outcome.

The use of lab equipment (pipettes, beakers, microscopes,) will be required during tissue sampling which will help to improve field-based data collection."

Well done Craig.

GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY ROWE SCIENTIFIC PTY LTD CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2023

The current recipient of the Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd Chemistry Scholarship at Griffith University in Queensland, is Ms Natali Marinovski.

Ms Natali Marinovski

In Natali's own words:

“I am currently undertaking my final year as an undergraduate and will continue with Honours in 2024. As a mature aged student who did not do math or science in high school, I was not quite sure what to expect. My infatuation with Chemistry came in the first trimester at Griffith University. I chose it as my second major in the following trimester. It was also in this trimester that I knew what I wanted to be when I ‘grow up;’ a Marine Megafauna Ecotoxicologist.

Marine Biology enables me to understand and communicate the effects heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants have on the marine environment. Having a greater appreciation of Chemistry allows me to dig deeper, not only in the biochemistry of living organisms and surrounding ecosystems, but the changes to chemical speciation as a result of increases in anthropogenic activity on this Blue Planet.

Image_15

Receiving this scholarship allows me to spend more time studying, researching, and confidently applying what I have learnt, and will be learning, towards the Environmental Science industry. It will also bring me one step closer to becoming a leader in the field of Marine Megafauna Ecotoxicology."

All the best Natali.

WESTERN SYDNEY UNIVERSITY ROWE SCIENTIFIC PTY LTD CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2023

Congratulations to Mr Aaron Bradley, a 2023 recipient of the Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd Chemistry Scholarship.

Mr Aaron Bradley

Western Sydney University interviews Aaron on receiving the Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd Chemistry Scholarship award, as below:

“I grew up around Western Sydney but moved to Rural Victoria when I was 14, after this I spent the next 6 years living there, I then had the opportunity to move back to New South Wales and took it. I was not sure what my life would be like, as I had moved states it had made things unclear how they would turn out, but at this point, in time I wouldn't change a thing, everything has turned out well.

What inspired you to apply for your course? Why did you choose to study at Western Sydney University?

I was originally studying a Bachelor of Business at La Trobe University in Victoria, but when I relocated back to NSW, I realized that I was in close proximity to a Western Sydney University Campus, I had always had a passion for the sciences and decided to apply to WSU on a whim, I got accepted and started mid-2020, and was probably one of the best choices I have ever made.

Image_16

What does receiving this scholarship/award mean to you?

It means that I will be able to engage more with my community and peers, I can spend more time at the university, and spend more time learning about the sciences. I also believe that it will open up networking opportunities which I think would be amazing.

What would you like to achieve this year? What are your long-term goals?

This year, I would like to finish my undergraduate degree, hopefully keeping consistently high results, I want to learn everything I can this year, and build a network of people from my subjects that I can keep in touch with as we graduate and enter the industry. My long-term goals are partially ambiguous, I have a Master's degree lined up in the field of astrophysics with Miroslav Filipovic, and I am hoping to do a project relating to chemistry as it is my biggest scientific interest.

Did you have to overcome hardship in order to attend university, or have you experienced circumstances that have made university study particularly challenging?

It had been several years since I had studied science, particularly chemistry, in high school, so there was a bit of a steep learning curve, especially since I started during semester 2 rather than semester 1. However, I overcame this rather quickly and am now well-versed in many fields of science with consistent distinction and high-distinction results.

What was your reaction when you heard you were being awarded your scholarship/award? How did you feel and who did you share your news with?

I was astonished, I was not expecting it at all, I applied for scholarships several months ago and was not expecting a response, but when I received the email I was very excited and couldn't believe it! The first person I told was my sister, who has always been my biggest supporter and believes in me the most. Then I told my parents and friends, who were all amazed as well.

If your donor was here today, what would you like to say?

I would like to thank them very much for the amazing opportunity that they have awarded to me. It means so much to me and I am hoping to make the donor proud and do my very best this year!"

Well done Aaron, from all of us here at Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.
