“When was the first permanent vacuum created in a laboratory setting? and who created it??"
Answer:
1643-44, by Evangelista Torricelli, a student of Galileo Galilei, who created the first vacuum in a lab setting when he filled a glass tube that was closed at one end, into a bowl of mercury and raised the closed end up out of the bowl. The weight of the mercury pulled the mercury down the tube to reach 760mm from the surface, leaving a partial vacuum at the top. Toricelli’s experiment also inadvertently created the first pressure gauge, and barometer. For his contributions, the unit Torr was named after him, which is defined as exactly 1/760th of a standard atmosphere.

“I am writing to say thank you for your generous donation and sponsoring of the UQ Rowe Scientific Chemistry Award - 3rd Year Laboratory Prize. I was pleasantly surprised to receive this award for the highest marks attained in the advanced experimental chemistry course I completed last year.
In a year that is particularly challenging for many, I feel fortunate to have received the prize and the associated money award, as it has allowed me to focus more directly on my honours year. For a bit of background, I graduated last year from a Bachelors of Mathematics and Science with a major in Chemistry. Since then I have been working towards my honours program in Mathematics, which involves a thesis focussed on stochastic approaches to chemical kinetics.
I am excited for what is to come and would really like to continue combining my love for both mathematics and chemistry in future work. Receiving your award has been an honour and has given me confidence to seek out more opportunities to get back in a chemistry laboratory after graduation.
Your contributions to the university and continued support of chemistry students is greatly appreciated.”

In Joshua’s words;
“I am writing to you as the recipient of the UQ Rowe Scientific Chemistry Award – 2nd Year Laboratory Prize. Firstly, I would like to sincerely thank you for the generosity that you have shown by continuing to fund this prize. Despite it being one of the most difficult subjects I have studied thus far at UQ, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience studying Experimental Chemistry.
It was the first time I had worked on my own whilst performing chemistry experiments, which was initially daunting, but I believe it boosted my laboratory skills immeasurably.
Over the course of a single semester, I learned to orient myself quickly in a lab, confidently use several pieces of equipment I had previously never even heard of, as well as communicate results far more effectively. It was a very enriching course and one that I am glad I put my best efforts into.
I currently study a dual degree in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at UQ and I am set to graduate at the end of 2022. I have strong interests in both the pharmaceutical and energy sectors, and I aspire to work in one of these fields in the future, where I believe my laboratory skills will serve me well.
I hope to put the money from this award towards future courses in my degree at UQ. In addition, receiving this award has certainly reinvigorated me in this unusual and challenging semester to continue to strive to excel in my studies. I am particularly looking forward to taking Advanced Experimental Chemistry next year, as I am sure are many of my peers.
Once again, thank you for your continued support, both myself and the University are extremely grateful.”

Ms Skye Sriratana
In Skye's words;
"I personally compete in Olympic weightlifting and have experienced exhaustion from loading plates before each lift, even when a barbell jack is used (ironedge.com.au, 2020). This inspired me to create a machine that completes this task as from personal experience, loading plates manually is physically tiring and can cause injury if proper technique is not used.
During training, weightlifters tend to focus on correct technique for their lift without considering technique for correct plate loading. Correct weightlifting technique primarily uses the large core muscle group, whilst the technique for plate loading utilises the spinal stabilisers which are a smaller muscle group. These smaller muscles are “not designed to lift heavy weights" (Drinkwater, 2021) and plate loading poses risk of injury if done incorrectly. Correct loading technique is not commonly taught to athletes by their coaches.
The Weight-Plate Loader (“Loader”) is safer for users as it is fully automated, conserving the athlete’s energy, allowing better performance during training."

Ms Charlotte D’Amore
In Charlotte's words;
“Sugar is used to preserve food. When you preserve food, it means you can eat it after a long period of time and the food has not grown mould or decayed. Sugar is used in pickling and jams to preserve both fruits and vegetables. However, not everyone can eat sugar.
My Grandad has diabetes and he is not allowed to eat much sugar, but uses sweeteners instead. This makes the food taste sweet, but I wanted to find out whether sweeteners are also able to preserve food from mould growth or not. Therefore, I wanted to investigate what effect different concentrations (levels) of sugar and sweeteners had mould on growth.
I thought it would be interesting to see if there was an ideal level of sugar to reduce mould growth. If lower concentrations are as effective as higher concentrations, then we could use less sugar to preserve food.
This could help companies make food with less sugar, which would be healthier for our teeth and our body’s health, as lots of sugar is bad for you. It would also be better for the environment as we would need to produce less sugar.
If higher levels of sugar are needed then it is important to know as we could reduce food spoilage caused by mould by adding more sugar. This would reduce food wastage, which is good for the environment. Investigating sweeteners is important as they may not preserve food in the same way as sugar. Knowing what sweeteners can do is important for people with diabetes who cannot eat sugar. I selected bread to test the sugar and sweetener as I knew that bread started to grow mould a few days after being baked. I selected white bread as I thought it would make it easier to see the area of mould on the bread. As there are many sweeteners available, I thought it was important to be consistent and so I selected a natural sweetener."
